Breaking Bread
On the first Sunday of each month we take part in communion. Pastor Bobby usually invites someone to lead our communion meditation. This action is an important element in our worship service and we’ve had many different voices share in their own way this integral doctrine of our Christian faith. Prior to coming to Crossroads, Emily and I attended another church in the Winchester area. We loved the church and community that God had placed us within. One day, however, I saw something that seemed odd to me; I noticed we only practiced communion on a quarterly basis. This reality was strange to me and felt like it was too infrequent. I’m not sharing to speak negatively against them, we love that church and continue to have a great relationship with them. During that season of my life I was reestablishing my faith; as I reflected on my childhood and upbringing, the importance of communion became clearer. The stream of Christianity I was raised in took communion each week. Because of this reality, I had the value instilled in me that every time we gathered we should receive the elements. There are a variety of theologies and doctrines surrounding communion. I'll spare you the details and intricacies of each of them. However, the importance of taking communion together is consistent across all the streams of biblical Christianity. One of my favorite scriptures on the subject of communion is the Emmaus Road story. We find this story in Luke 24:24-35 and it begins like this, “And behold, on that same day, two of them were traveling to a village named Emmaus that was sixty stadia distant from Jerusalem." (Lexham English). As these two men travelled they encountered a man who journeyed with them, discussing the current events that had just transpired. The story concludes with – spoiler alert – Jesus revealing Himself after He give thanks and broke the bread. This story does a few things, most notably, brings attention to the fact that their eyes were open in that very moment Jesus blesses the bread. One of them even said, “Didn’t our hearts burn when we were walking with Him?” It's hard not to see the power of revelation of Christ in this very moment. This Sunday we will come to the Lord's table for our monthly communion practice and meditation. For those who attend Crossroads regularly, things will be slightly different. I've prepared a message from a recent study I've done on the subject of communion. I want to encourage each of you who read this article to prepare your hearts to partake and receive the elements of communion. I believe God is speaking and revealing something new and refreshing as we visit the ‘why’ we practice coming to the Lord's table. |
